How to clean your Dyson vacuum
Every machine needs maintenance to keep it performing at its best. And without cleaning your vacuum cleaner, you may start to notice a reduction in its suction power.
Dyson vacuum cleaners have been expertly designed to make both cleaning your home and your machine simple.
Whether you own a cordless, upright or robot, here’s how to clean your Dyson vacuum cleaner – so it lasts as long as possible.
What you’ll need
- Soft lint-free cloth
- Flathead screwdriver or a coin
- Running water
- Rubbish bin
Step 1 – Unplug your machine
It may seem obvious, but it’s important to make sure your Dyson vacuum is unplugged or switched off before you begin.
Step 2 – Empty and clean the bin
Dyson vacuums come with clear bins, so you can tell at a glance when they need emptying. Overfilling your vacuum bin could reduce suction power, so remember to empty dust and debris when it reaches the MAX line.
Here’s how to empty and clean Dyson vacuum bins:
1. Press the red button to release it and slide to disconnect.
2. Hold with the bin in a downwards position and push the release lever.
3. Clean the bin with a damp lint-free cloth.
4. Leave to dry completely.
5. Slide the bin back onto the base, ensuring it clicks into place.
IMPORTANT: Don’t put the bin in a dishwasher, submerge it, or use detergent, polishes or air fresheners. Doing so could cause damage to your Dyson vacuum that isn’t covered under guarantee.
Make sure you leave the bin to dry completely before reinserting.
Step 3 – Remove and wash the filter(s)
Your vacuum filter does the important job of trapping microscopic dust and dirt – preventing it being expelled back into the air. Yet as you use your vacuum day-to-day, the filter naturally gets dirty.
To keep your machine running at maximum efficiency, we recommend cleaning your filter once a month. Newer Dyson models feature an LCD screen, which indicates when the filter needs cleaning.
Follow these basic filter cleaning steps:
1. Remove your Dyson filter(s) from your machine.
2. Tap your filter(s) lightly on the side of the bin to remove any loose dust and debris.
3. Rinse the filter(s) under warm tap water then gently squeeze the water out of the filter. Repeat until the water runs clear.
4. Remove any excess water and leave to dry completely in an area with plenty of airflow for at least 24 hours.
5. Refit the filter(s) once completely dry.
We also recommend visiting our support pages and reading your user manual, as the number of filters and their location varies depending on your Dyson vacuum model.
Step 4 – Clean the brush bar(s)
Dyson vacuum brush bars collect hair, dirt and debris, so don’t neglect this step – especially if you have pets.
Clear your machine of any hair/fiber or debris using scissors or your fingers.
IMPORTANT: Brush bars on some Dyson vacuum cleaners can’t be washed or submerged and doing so could cause damage that isn’t covered under your Dyson guarantee.
If your vacuum cleaner model has a soft roller cleaner head brush bar, then wash it as needed, using these steps:
1. Push the end cap up fully and remove the brush bar.
2. Remove the end cap, but don’t wash it.
3. Clear the brush bar(s) of any hair/fiber or debris.
4. Wash the brush bar(s) thoroughly under cold water only and gently rub to remove dirt.
5. Gently squeeze the bar(s) to remove excess water.
6. Stand the brush bar(s) upright and leave to dry completely for a minimum of 24 hours.
7. Refit when completely dry.
Step 5 – Ensure all parts are dry before reassembling
Before reinserting your vacuum components, it’s important to make sure they’re completely dry. Wet components, such as wet filters, may cause mold growth and you could risk damaging the motor.
Step 6 – Wipe the exterior
Now you’ve cleaned the inside of your machine, it’s time to give the outside a quick wipe down. While you’re waiting for the parts to dry, use a damp lint-free cloth to wipe over the plastic casing.
Step 7 – Reassemble your vacuum
Put your Dyson vacuum back together – ready for powerful cleaning around your home.
