Dyson launches first three-in-one purifying humidifying fan, the Dyson Pure Humidify+CoolTM
The new Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool™ machine uses UV-C technology to hygienically humidify in winter, evaporatively cool in summer and efficiently purify all year round.

Pioneered by Dyson’s microbiologists and engineers, today Dyson launches the Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool™ in the US, a machine engineered to both automatically purify and hygienically humidify your whole room¹ all year round.
For any humidifier or purifier: hygiene is paramount. Building on Dyson’s well-established purification range, which captures 99.97% of air pollutants as small as 0.3 microns in your home, the Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool™ introduces a unique technology column featuring a single high power UV-C light to kill waterborne bacteria. This, coupled with a biostatic silver-threaded evaporator, kills 99.9% of bacteria in the water, delivering hygienically humidified and purified air to your home.²

Dry, dirty air
We spend up to 90% of our time behind closed doors,³ with modern air conditioning and heating that are increasingly exposing us to dry air. When the air is too dry or too humid, bacteria and viruses can thrive.⁴ Humidifiers are well-established solutions for dry air.
However, where there is standing water, there is often the opportunity for bacteria to multiply. If water is not properly treated to kill bacteria, the dirty water may be expelled into the room, mixing with indoor air pollution caused by everyday household items such as gas stoves, beauty products, cleaning supplies or pets. Air pollution is often made up of particles and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). One of the most common VOCs is formaldehyde which can be emitted from items like pressed wood products, cleaning agents, carpets, permanent press fabrics, cigarettes, paints and varnishes.
UV-C light kills bacteria in water by denaturing their DNA so they can no longer multiply. This process relies on thorough exposure to UV-C light. In the design of the Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool™, engineers conducted significant research to explore optimum exposure of bacteria to UV-C light in order for it to be denatured. They developed a highly reflective PTFE tube through which UV-C light is reflected. As water is pumped up from the water tank and passes through these multiple rays, the UV-C kills 99.9% of bacteria in the water in the first pass2.
Once treated, the water fills the collars of the 3D Air-mesh evaporator. Silver strands are interwoven into the top and bottom faces of the Air-mesh material to create its unique structure and provide biostatic properties. This inhibits bacteria growth on the evaporator. Silver has been used for over two centuries in surgery and childbirth, as well as in burn treatment and water disinfection.⁵ Inside the evaporator, purified airflow is hygienically humidified by the water vapor released from the evaporator and projected through the Air Amplifier into the room.
Karen Holeyman, Research Lead for Microbiology, said: “Usually, the bacteria that surround us day-to-day don’t harm us – coexisting and cooperating with us. Occasionally, when conditions change, these bacteria can become more problematic. As scientists we wanted to ensure the Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool™ remains hygienic. We extensively tested our technology against the standard test bacteria – Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus – and also the hardy environmental organism Bacillus subtilis. Bacillus subtilis can survive many environmental stresses including UVC – still we obtain a 99.9% reduction of these organisms within the water system².”
Unique deep clean cycle
A common complaint about humidifiers is how difficult they can be to clean. For simple and hassle-free maintenance, Dyson has engineered a deep clean cycle that thoroughly cleans all parts of the machine exposed to water, without laborious, time-consuming elbow-grease. When cleaning is required, the deep clean cycle button will illuminate, and the LCD display will direct the user through the cleaning process. Simply place the 3D Air-mesh evaporator in the water tank, fill the tank with water and one of the citric acid powder packets included with the machine and activate the deep clean cycle.
Tackling indoor pollution
Dyson engineers have been developing filtration technologies for over 25 years. The Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool™ intelligently senses pollution and humidity levels and projects hygienically humidified, purified air around the room.¹
- Sensing: Lasers measure and detect ultrafine particles. A separate sensor detects the amount of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), such as formaldehyde, benzene, and NO2. A third measures relative humidity and temperature. The LCD display on the machine tracks this data in real time. The data can also be seen in the Dyson Link app.⁶
- Capturing: A HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including allergens, bacteria and pollen. Activated carbon, coated with Tris (Trishydroxymethylaminomethane) to increase absorption efficiency, removes gases like NO2 and Benzene.
- Destroying: The Dyson Pure Humidify+CoolTM also comes in a Cryptomic™ version. The Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool CryptomicTM includes an additional technology panel that continuously destroys formaldehyde* Billions of atom-sized tunnels are the optimal size and shape to trap and destroy formaldehyde, breaking it down into tiny amounts of water and CO2.**
- Projecting: Equipped with Air Multiplier™ technology, the Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool™ projects purified, humidified air to every corner of the room.1
New airflow modes – for optimum comfort
For the first time in Dyson Pure™ machines, Dyson engineers have incorporated Jet Axis Control technology. Two jets at each side of the air amplifier are independently controlled to provide direct cooling, oscillation mode, backwards airflow mode or new Breeze mode.
- Breeze mode: Many of us enjoy the refreshing feeling of a natural outdoor breeze on a hot day – termed ‘thermal alliesthesia’. So Associate Principal Research Engineer Tim Jukes and his team used a precision 3-axis ultrasonic anemometer to collect over 40 million data points from eight locations on Dyson’s Malmesbury Research and Development campus. From this, Tim’s team devised an algorithm to mimic natural airflow patterns using the machine’s oscillating barrels, to bring that refreshing breeze feeling indoors.
- Fan mode: In fan mode a baffle stays in place to deliver a powerful, frontward stream of purified air. The machine also has the ability to oscillate 45 or 90 degrees.
- Backwards airflow mode: The Jet Axis Control barrels rotate to close, the baffle opens and air is diverted through the rear of Air Amplifier. So you can purify and humidify without the cooling sensation.
Engineered for real homes
Dyson Pure™ machines are engineered for real homes. The industry standard for testing air purifiers measures performance using a laboratory test conducted in a compact chamber 1,008 ft3 in size, with a ceiling fan to circulate the air - and one sensor inside the room measuring air quality. For more representative testing, Dyson engineers set out to find a better way. Based on a larger room size of 2,860 ft3 with no added fan, Dyson’s POLAR test uses eight sensors in the corners of the room and one sensor in the center collect air quality data. With a similar test measuring the rate and evenness of humidification, our engineers ensure that the Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool™ delivers uniform, whole-room purification and humidification.2
